Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer: 7 Questions to Ask

Of all your vendors, the photographer may be the most important: the flowers wilt, the cake gets eaten, but the photos remain. Ask these seven questions before you book.

1. Can we see a complete wedding album?

Portfolios only show the best shots. A complete wedding delivery shows how the photographer performs in difficult light, rain or a dark party venue.

2. Who will photograph our day?

At larger studios, the photographer on the website isn't always the one who shows up. Have the photographer's name written into the contract.

3. What happens in case of illness?

A professional has a network of backups and puts this in writing. Ask about it explicitly.

4. How many photos do we get, and when?

On average, wedding photographers deliver 400 to 800 edited photos within 4 to 8 weeks. Large deviations are a signal to ask more questions.

5. How do you work during the ceremony?

A good wedding photographer is invisibly present. Ask how they position themselves and whether they coordinate with the officiant.

6. What exactly is included in the price?

Watch out for travel costs, extra hours, albums and the rights to the files. The cheapest quote is rarely complete.

7. Is there a click?

You'll spend the entire day together. Always plan a (video) call or engagement shoot. If it feels awkward, you'll see it in the photos.
