Writing Wedding Vows: A Step-by-Step Guide with Examples

Self-written wedding vows are the most beautiful moment of the ceremony for many guests. But a blank sheet of paper can be quite intimidating. With this step-by-step guide, the words will come naturally.

Step 1: Collect raw material

Start two months in advance with a note on your phone. Write down: your first meeting, the moment you knew they were the one, a quirky habit you love, a difficult period you got through together, and what you promise for the future.

Step 2: Choose a structure

A proven structure for wedding vows:

1. Opening – what this person means to you
2. Looking back – one concrete, personal memory
3. The present – why you're standing here today
4. The promises – two to four concrete promises
5. Closing – one sentence that sums it all up

Step 3: Make it concrete

"I love you because you're sweet" says little. "I love how you bake pancakes every Sunday morning, even when I'm still asleep" sticks. Concrete details make vows personal — and bring both the smile and the tear to your guests.
