Getting Married in 2026: How to Start Planning
Just engaged? Congratulations! This step-by-step plan helps you start your wedding preparations calmly, without overlooking anything.
Just engaged? Then one of the most exciting periods of your life is about to begin. But where do you start? This step-by-step plan helps you take the first steps without stress.
Step 1: Set your budget
Before visiting a single venue, it's wise to agree on a realistic budget together. The average wedding in the Netherlands costs between €15,000 and €25,000, but it can absolutely be done with less. Discuss who is contributing and where your priorities lie.
Step 2: Choose a season and date
Your date determines a lot: venue availability, atmosphere, and often the price. Getting married outside the high season (May through September) can save you hundreds to thousands of euros.
Step 3: Create a guest list
The number of guests is the biggest cost driver of your wedding. Start with a rough list and split it into "must be there" and "nice if they can join". That makes it easy to adjust later.
Step 4: Book the key vendors
Popular wedding venues, photographers and DJs are often fully booked 12 to 18 months in advance. Book the venue first, then the photographer and your master of ceremonies or wedding planner.
Step 5: Enjoy the process
Deliberately plan moments when you are not working on the wedding. The preparation should be just as enjoyable as the day itself.
